Intro: Mafia Rule
January 6 was not just a riot or a protest gone wrong. January 6 was Donald Trump’s attempted coup. Returning him to power will tell him that he can break any rules and the nation will still back him. -Slow News, 24 Oct 2024
Well, here we are.
A brazen wave of law-breaking by a second Trump administration is washing over the country, just as predicted. Trump is working hard to transform the United States of America. Once the pioneer of rule by democratically-enacted laws and checks and balances, our nation is now headed for mafia rule in which all who want to receive government favor and to avoid government anger must kiss the ring of King Donald.
What does mafia rule mean? It means that the laws on the books do not matter, because whatever happens is determined by what the rulers do, and the rulers do whatever they want. Your local politicians are held in check by the politicians above them, and so on up to the top boss. You are doing your job and following the law? Doesn’t matter if the boss wants you out. You are persecuting the innocent and breaking the law? OK if that is what the boss wants.
That is how the Russia of Vladimir Putin works. It is how many corrupt dictatorships are governed.
We are still far from being a mafia state. But Trump has only been in office for 3 months! What kind of a country we are in 3 years will depend on how we react now. Every victory, every sign of acquiescence that the new mafia racks up is a green light for them to erode democracy more.
We are told that Americans are indifferent to “attacks on democracy,” and react to more immediate problems like inflation or unemployment. The average Russian is not writing a newspaper column which will cause her to have a “tragic accidental fall” out of a tenth story window. But that average Russian will suffer when her son is sent off to be killed invading Ukraine, or when she becomes impoverished when Russia becomes economically isolated.
If the other party wins in a democracy, you can get to work trying to win next time. If democracy ends, there is no next time. And suddenly all those terrible things the leaders do not do because they want to win next time become possibilities.
