Infographic: Israel/Palestine Since the Peace Treaty

In 1993 Israel and representatives of the Palestinians signed the Declaration of Principles, commonly called the Oslo Accord, in which both sides agreed to peacefully settle the Israel/Palestine conflict. Since then, the region has continued to see a complex history of war, terrorism, oppression, and occasionally continued glimmers of hope.

I believe that to understand the massacres of 2023, we need to know how we got from Oslo to here. To that end I’ve put together a timeline showing major events in the conflict from 1993 to 2023. Timeline shows major treaties and negotiations, major outbreaks of violence, the end of continuous Israeli military presence in Lebanon and Gaza, a running count of fatalities, and the political leadership of Israel and Palestine. I did not include deaths for 2023, since unfortunately the numbers are rapidly climbing as I write this.

Usually I include references and further explanations, but a quick internet search should uncover explanations for all the events shown here. Data on conflict deaths comes from the data base of the human rights organization Btselem.

An earlier post, The Attack, gives a synopsis of the entire conflict, a parable describing the struggle, and a list of Israeli and Palestinian blind spots that I believe hinders efforts to bring peace.
