Autumnal Equinox Song

Sun setting, moon rising, while watch we all the spreading nights
Circling another year as time’s unwilling satellites
Summer facing, winter chasing, squinting with our clouded sight
We seem to pause as if we’ve reached the pinnacle of our yearly flight.

The sun swings the world in a light-tethered circle
The world flings the tide from the deeps to the shallows
The tide heaves the waves on the uplands and beaches
The waves slap the shore in an unending banter.

  1. Barry,
Great poem! I especially liked your line on the tides as it is very timely for those of us living along waterways in coastal South Florida. We are seeing some very high tides. They are tackling our seawalls and docks. No denying the march of time and the effects of sea level rise here.

    1. The tide is a comforting symbol of regularity when it washes in and then washes out again.

Not so much when it washes in and then stays!
